We’ve decided to change the cover art of our “Modern Reality E.P.”
Let’s face it – the previous “white label” artwork was a bit dull.
We had to cancel a big gig in the summer because of the riots and the new artwork tips a hat to that.
Remember, is you’ve not done so already, you can download the whole E.P. for free from our facebook page.
Enjoy!

We're playing at Proud Camden!

So, we’re playing the main stage at Proud Camden. Who’d have ever thuoght such things were possible? I’m really looking forward to this one and it should be one hell of a night

Friday at the Monto

We opened the bill at the famous Monto Water Rats on Friday and we enjoyed it. We had a few “technical hitches” (I jumped off stage and when I jumped back on, I kicked out Youri’s guitar cable!) but our show went down well, all told.

We need to tweak our set a bit, I feel. I’m going to write another obnoxious big beat song and we’re gonig to shorten “Welcome,” but it’s onwards and upwards for us.

Our next gig is going to be in Shoreditch and is going to be filmed, so I’ll have some more video to show you, and after that it’s our biggest gig yet – at the O2 Academy, Islington.

Watch us, we’re about to take off!

Whoop Whoop,
We’re expanding out of north London. We’re going to be playing in Hoxton and in Shoreditch in July.

More details soon

Hi everyone,
It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and a lot has happened in the meantime.

If you’ve being following, you’ll know already that we’ve recorded our debut E.P. “Modern Reality” and now, this is available as a free download from our Facebook page.

We’ve also managed to realise a teenage ambition of mine. I was a proper indie-kid when I was younger. I got really into bands like Veruca Salt, Supergrass and Radiohead and every single Wednesday, I devotedly make my way down to my local newsagents newsagents in Hull and buy copies of both the NME and the now defunct Melody Maker to find out what Brett Anderson, Louise Wener (how fit was she?!) and all were up to.

There was obviously a “scene” centred round Camden and the places that I can remember being mentioned all the time were The Good Mixer pub and The Dublin Castle gig venue. I thought if I could ever be in a band that played at the Dublin castle, then I’d be soooooo cool.

Well, my friends I’ve done it now.

On Fri 13th May 2011, Alchemy opened the night at the Dublin castle and we had a great time. We got a pretty good response too and believe me, there was plenty of drunken dancing at the aftershow party too. I don’t really feel that I’m any cooler now than I was as a teenager, but still it’s a great thing to say we’ve done.

Last night, we played another show at The Purple Turltle in Camden. Again, another great gig venue and another great night. There was grooving a plenty and I think I even spotted a bit of line dancing at one point! This gig was part of the Surface Festival and I’m happy to say that we’ve qualified for the next round which will be at the O2 Academy, Islington!

It’s amazing to think that we’ve gone from playing our first shambolic gig above a pub to playing the fucking O2 Academy in less that a year! When I think back to that first gig I actually feel upset. I feel I should apologise to everyone who came to see us – we were so cringeworthingly bad it was unbelievable. I suppose it was a stepping stone and everyone has to start somewhere right?

What’s nice is that we’ve done it without any hype or media attention at all. There’s been no press, no radio, it’s all been by word of mouth and things are definitely looking rosy for us.

In addition to all that, we’re playing another great gig in about 3 weeks at Monto Water Rats who contacted us a few weeks ago. We’ll be really pumped for that one. We’ll have new songs and are going to put on an amazing show. If you’re free, come down – it’ll be great to see you there.

Let me know what you think. Comments are always welcome

Enjoy.

I’ve been wanting this since fifteen, it used to be just dreams, but to me it just seemed

That reality would be just me, picking at the seams for all eternity.

My three-score years and ten to comprehend the lives of men and then come to an end

I used to question if there was any point, any purpose,

On dark days my insecurities would surface.

I sometimes wonder if all the best years have passed,

and all I have are faded, jaded memories of the past.

Missed opportunities, crushed ideals and shattered dreams,

but now I found you, I see what it all means

As I sit and contemplate our fate, I can’t escape there’s no time to wait or debate or hesitate.

I know that I’ll be true to you, I know that this is news to you,

but I’m going to have to prove to you and somehow get it through to you

That I’ll be there for you

Whatever, whenever, we’ll face our darkest evils and stand as one together,

Because I care for you

You make me feel complete, you picked me off my knees and put me back upon my feet

And I’m as scared as you

I never felt this way before, I’ll be the man that stands with you forevermore

And to be fair to you

These words may seem absurd, I don’t blame you if you don’t believe what you just heard

The fact is – everything is better when you’re around

You lift me to the highest heights; you pick me up when I go down

When you’re away I get flashes of the curve of your smile, the gleam of your eyes, the smell of your thighs.

And I have to catch my breath….

And now it seems those teenage dreams are reality in you and me.

Love me, hug me, put no one above me.

Praise me, amaze me, be the one who saves me

My Love, I feel your touch, I feel it’s never going to be enough

I need you to prove it’s true and see it through because I love you.

I never thought that you would be the one I would be falling for

I dream of you, I feel like I’ve not felt before

But I’m not sure if what I feel is truly real, so here’s the deal

Please give me some more time

I used to hear stories of the all-consuming passion that changes your life in a heart-stopping fashion

I never thought I would see, never thought it could be, I never would have believed it would happen to me

So, this is all I have to say, I just pray you’ll feel the same about me some day.

It’s not chocolates and roses or turtle white doves,

But it’s honest and it’s true; it’s for you, My Love.”

I was working a night shift last night so I caught the bus back home at 08:30 this morning.

As often happens to me after a night shift, I started to feel really quite philosophical about things and I have to say that sitting and watching people go about their business at that time in the morning, you really get a feel of how the city runs. The workmen in their overalls, the office workers clutching their morning coffee, the city types in their sharp suits – this is what we do. This is who we are and it’s people like this – millions of them up and down the land – that keep the country going.

Once you get out of the box of your own mindset of “I need to get to work, I’ve got x,y and z to do this morning,” watching other people go about their business is fascinating, I think.

I’m very much a “people person.” I find other people more interesting and fascinating that anything else. I’d much rather have an afternoon alone with a stranger than an afternoon alone with a new guitar – for example. Everyone has their story and, once you scratch the surface, often their stories are remarkable.

Posted: April 19, 2011 in Gigging, Recording, Song Writing

Since my last blog, we’ve recorded our debut EP, we’ve played a great gig at 229 The Venue in London and written a couple of songs.

Not bad eh?

“You get dealt a new hand soon after you fold” is a line from my favourite song of last year – Airplanes by B.O.B. feat Hayley Williams.

The reason I’m thinking of this is that things seem to be conspiring to frustrate me at the moment. We were meant to be recordin our first demo in the studio last weekend and this, but for differing reasons, both sessions got cancelled. I feel like we’re banging our heads against a wall. We’re ready to record. We’ve got the songs, we’re tight, we know how to play them, it shouldn’t take us long to do it – but we’ve spent about 6 weeks trying to do it and have got fuck all to show for it.

Aaaargh!!!

I suppose it’s times like this that you have to just keep believing and pick yourself up and try again. I want to have the recording done, mastered and printed so we can give to people at our gig on the 27th, but it’s looking less and less likely that this is going to happen.

But, as they say, as one door shuts, another one opens. Let’s hope that something better is round the corner.

I’m going to play the video of that song to cheer me up.
